About the Fellowship: Clinical Training: Palliative Care
Duke Hospital Palliative Care Service
- An exciting addition to Duke University Medical Center, this
service began in May 2003.
- Four of the Geriatric Medicine Faculty will be participating,
with Anthony N. Galanos, M.A., M.D., as Director of the service.
- The service provides both Palliative Care Consults and inpatient
care.
- Anchored by Jennifer Gentry, N.P., the service will have rotating
attendings from different disciplines (from Oncology to Geriatrics).
- The Fellow will be involved in direct patient care, and will
round daily with the Nurse Practitioner.
- The Fellow also assists in Palliative Care consultations, and
attends team meetings twice a week.
Duke Health Community Care (DHCC)
- DHCC includes Duke community programs of hospice, home health
care, infusion services and bereavement.
- Toni Cutson, MD, a faculty member in the division of geriatrics, is medical director.
- Fellows work with a community hospice program care team, including Dr. Cutson, the hospice nurse, a social worker, a chaplain, CNAs, volunteers, bereavement counselors, and a nurse practitioner.
- Fellows will accompany the nurse, social worker and/or chaplain
on visits to the patient’s home or facility. Each patient
is presented at interdisciplinary rounds every two weeks.
- In addition to patients cared for in their home or in a facility,
patients are also seen in the 6 bed inpatient care facility (ICF).
