Geriatrics Fellowship Program

About the Fellowship: Curriculum

During the first year of fellowship, a program of formal didactics and conferences complements experiences in clinical care. The overall curriculum provides fellows with knowledge and skills to care for older patients. Specifically, the curriculum is enriched with training in evidence-based medicine, clinical teaching skills, and interdisciplinary team care.

CurriculumGeriatrics Core Curriculum

  • Series of lectures given for the geriatrics and geriatric pharmacy fellows covering common topics in geriatrics and gerontology.
  • Intended to prepare fellows for management of commonly encountered issues and conditions.

Evidence-based Medicine in Geriatrics

  • Series of interactive presentations on the practice of Evidence Based Medicine in geriatrics.
  • Presentations by division faculty on formulating questions, searching the literature, basic clinical epidemiology, and critical appraisal of a variety of articles.
  • Special emphasis is placed on methodological challenges encountered in the care of older adults by interdisciplinary teams.
  • Fellows utilize skills promoted in the course during the Academic Geriatrics Rotation.

Clinical Teaching and Medical Decision Making Workshops

  • Interactive sessions provide fellows with the opportunity to learn and master a variety of clinical teaching skills applicable to a variety of settings and key issues in bedside medical decision making.
  • Led by Dr. Larry Greenblatt, who has special training in clinical teaching.

The Clinician Network (http://careinaging.duke.edu/clinicians) is a resource developed for general internal medicine doctors looking to cultivate clinical skills in geriatrics. Clinicians will find resources for teaching, for learning, and for daily use in clinics and skilled nursing facilities.

The Long-Term Care Network (http://careinaging.duke.edu/longtermcare) is a resource for long-term care providers, clinicians, and families. The network contains educational powerpoint presentations, case studies, information for clinicians and patients, and links to other website resources. The Long-Term Care Network is currently under construction, and will hopefully become a reliable and comprehensive resource for you.


Conferences
